This box: view • talk • edit Samadhi (Sanskrit: समाधि) is a Hindu and Buddhist term that describes a non-dualistic state of consciousness in which the consciousness of the experiencing subject becomes one with the experienced object,[1] and in which the mind becomes still (one-pointed or concentrated)[2] though the person remains conscious. Sahaj samadhi is the effortless and continual state of perfection of a satguru.[3] It varies from technical terms used to describe the higher levels of concentrated meditation, or dhyana, in Yogic schools, and is considered a precursor for enlightenment, or Nirvana, in Buddhism. It is the eighth and final limb of the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, and comprises the pinnacle of achievements in Samyama, the three-tiered practice of meditation including also dharana and dhyana. Samadhi is also the Hindi word for a structure commemorating the dead (similar to a mausoleum), which may or may not contain the body of the deceased. Samadhis are often built in this way to honour people regarded as saints or gurus in Hindu religious traditions wherein such souls are said to have passed into (or were already in) samadhi at the time of death. Its etymology comes from sam (together or integrated), a (towards), and dha (to get, to hold). Thus the result might be seen to be to acquire integration or wholeness, or truth (samapatti). [edit] Samadhi in Hinduism Samadhi is the main subject of the first part of the Yoga Sutras called Samadhi-pada. According to Vyasa, a major figure in Hinduism and one of the traditional authors of the Mahabharata, "yoga is samadhi." This is generally interpreted to mean that Samadhi is a state of complete control (samadhana) over the functions and distractions of consciousness. In practice Samadhi is said to be the state of being aware of one’s Existence without thinking, in a state of undifferentiated “Beingness." Three intensities (depths) of Samadhi are usually understood in Hinduism. - Laja Samadhi

Laja Samadhi is a latent ("laja"), potential level of samadhi. It begins in deep meditation or trance—even with movement, such as dancing. This kind of samadhi is a state of joy, deep and general well-being, and peaceful meditation. Savikalpa Samadhi refers to the initial temporary state of full-valued samadhi. The conscious mind is still active, as is the kalpa, meaning imagination. One should compare this meaning to that of sankalpa, which is "wish." Kalpa takes on a different, but related, meaning to sankalpa because one must use imagination or consciousness (kalpa) to envision a wish or desire (sankalpa). Conversely, vikalpa means "against imagination." At this final level of samadhi, the mind has become quiet and given up its desires and attendant. Vikalpa leads to the Truth, releasing one from any binds of mind (which are mostly imaginations). In Savikalpa Samadhi, we get the taste of Bliss and Beingness, but are still attached to our erroneous identification with the body as well as to our numerous worldly attractions. Nirvikalpa Samadhi is the end result. There are no more kalpas (imaginings, wishes or other products from work of the mind), because the mind is finally under control. Upon entering Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the differences we saw before have faded and we can see everything as one. In this condition nothing but pure Awareness remains and nothing is missing to take away from Wholeness and Perfection. Entering samadhi in the beginning takes effort and holding on to a state of samadhi takes even more effort. The beginning stages of samadhi (Laja and Savikalpa Samadhi) are only temporary. By "effort" it is not meant that the mind has to work more. Instead, it means work to control the mind and release the self. Note that normal levels of meditation (mostly the lower levels) can be held automatically, as in "being in the state of meditation" rather than overtly "meditating." The ability to obtain positive results from meditation is much more difficult than simply meditating. It is recommended to find a qualified spiritual master (guru or yogi) who can teach a meditator about the workings of the mind. Samadhi is the only stable unchanging reality; all else is ever-changing and does not bring everlasting peace or happiness. Staying in Nirvikalpa Samadhi is effortless but even from this condition one must eventually return to ego-consciousness. Otherwise, this highest level of Samadhi leads to Nirvana, which means total Unity and the logical end of individual identity (and also death of the body). However, it is entirely possible to stay in Nirvikalpa Samadhi and yet be fully functional in this world. This condition is known as Sahaja Nirvikalpa Samadhi or Sahaj Samadhi (sahaja means "spontaneous" in Sanskrit). Only the truly Enlightened (Satguru) can be and remain spontaneously free. In Nirvikalpa Samadhi, all attachment to the material world and all karma is dissolved. All awareness is withdrawn step by step from the physical, astral and causal bodies until self-realization or oneness with the soul is achieved. During this process, breathing ceases and the heart stops beating. Aware and fully conscious oneness with soul is then achieved in a most loving way, and all cells of the physical body are flooded with the Ocean of Divine Love and Divine Bliss for any period of duration—hours, days, weeks, until the individual shifts his awareness from the soul back to the physical body. Being fully functional in this world, his awareness stays in connection with the Divine. But some "strange" conditions accompany this state—better health (the body is sustained by Divine Grace), better feelings (even for other people who may contact the body which the enlightened soul has reidentified with) and various miraculous happenings may occur in connection with the Enlightened one. Mahasamadhi (literally great samadhi) is the Hindi term for a realized yogi's conscious departure from the physical body at death. Which is also known as Nirvana (see above). Mahasamadhi is the final conscious exit from the physical body. Every infinitesimal piece of attachment or karma is completely surrendered unto God and dissolved into the Divine Ocean of Love. The individual transcends to worlds beyond karma and returns to God, merging into transcendental Bliss. [edit] Samadhi in Bhakti The Vaishnava Bhakti Schools of Yoga define Samadhi as "complete absorption into the object of one's love (Krishna)." Rather than thinking of "nothing," true samadhi is said to be achieved only when one has pure, unmotivated love of God. Thus samadhi can be entered into through meditation on the personal form of God, even while performing daily activities a practitioner can strive for full samadhi. - "Anyone who is thinking of Krsna always within himself, he is first-class yogi." If you want perfection in yoga system, don't be satisfied only by practicing a course of asana. You have to go further. Actually, the perfection of yoga system means when you are in samadhi, always thinking of the Visnu form of the Lord within your heart, without being disturbed... Controlling all the senses and the mind. You have to control the mind, control the senses, and concentrate everything on the form of Vishnu. That is called perfection of yoga" - A. C. [edit] Samadhi, a description In his book Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda, a reputed modern-day spiritual saint of India and teacher of Kriya Yoga, gives this stirring description of Samadhi consciousness: - My body became immovably rooted; breath was drawn out of my lungs as if by some huge magnet. Soul and mind instantly lost their physical bondage, and streamed out like a fluid piercing light from my every pore. The flesh was as though dead, yet in my intense awareness I knew that never before had I been fully alive. My sense of identity was no longer narrowly confined to a body, but embraced the circumambient atoms. People on distant streets seemed to be moving gently over my own remote periphery. The roots of plants and trees appeared through a dim transparency of the soil; I discerned the inward flow of their sap.
- The whole vicinity lay bare before me. My ordinary frontal vision was now changed to a vast spherical sight, simultaneously all perceptive. Through the back of my head I saw men strolling far down Rai Ghat Road, and noticed also a white cow who was leisurely approaching. When she reached the space in front of the open ashram gate, I observed her with my two physical eyes. As she passed by, behind the brick wall, I saw her clearly still.
- All objects within my panoramic gaze trembled and vibrated like quick motion pictures. My body, Master's, the pillared courtyard, the furniture and floor, the trees and sunshine, occasionally became violently agitated, until all melted into a luminescent sea; even as sugar crystals, thrown into a glass of water, dissolve after being shaken. The unifying light alternated with materialisations of form, the metamorphoses revealing the law of cause and effect in creation.
- An oceanic joy broke upon calm endless shores of my soul. The Spirit of God, I realized, is exhaustless Bliss; His body is countless tissues of light. A swelling glory within me began to envelop towns, continents, the earth, solar and stellar systems, tenuous nebulae, and floating universes. The entire cosmos, gently luminous, like a city seen afar at night, glimmered within the infinitude of my being. The sharply etched global outlines faded somewhat at the farthest edges; there I could see a mellow radiance, ever undiminished. It was indescribably subtle; the planetary pictures were formed of a grosser light.
- The divine dispersion of rays poured from an Eternal Source, blazing into galaxies, transfigured with ineffable auras. Again and again I saw the creative beams condense into constellations, then resolve into sheets of transparent flame. By rhythmic reversion, sextillion worlds passed into diaphanous luster; fire became firmament.
- I cognized the center of the empyrean as a point of intuitive perception in my heart. Irradiating splendor issued from my nucleus to every part of the universal structure. Blissful amrita, the nectar of immortality, pulsed through me with a quicksilver-like fluidity. The creative voice of God I heard resounding as Aum, the vibration of the Cosmic Motor.
- Suddenly the breath returned to my lungs. With a disappointment almost unbearable, I realized that my infinite immensity was lost. Once more I was limited to the humiliating cage of a body, not easily accommodative to the Spirit. Like a prodigal child, I had run away from my macrocosmic home and imprisoned myself in a narrow microcosm.
[edit] Samadhi as leaving the body Advanced yogis have been said to consciously leave (or disidentify with) their bodies as a vital step in the attainment of this final samadhi, or soul-liberation. It is at this time that the soul knows a complete and unbroken union with the Heavenly Godhead, and, being free from the limitations of the body, merges effortlessly into the transcendent amrita of Divine Bliss. It is said that sometimes the yogi leaves the body and returns. According to Meher Baba, Jesus entered into nirvikalpa samadhi at the time of his crucifixion.[6] [edit] Samadhi in Buddhism -
Main article: Samadhi (Buddhism) Samadhi, or concentration of the mind (one-pointedness of mind, cittassa-ekaggata), is the third division of the Eightfold Path of the Buddha's teaching: pañña (wisdom), sila (conduct), samadhi (concentration) - within which it is developed by samatha meditation. It was taught by the Buddha using 40 different objects of meditation, according to the Visuddhimagga, an ancient commentarial text. These objects include the breath (anapanasati meditation), loving kindness (metta meditation), various colours, earth, fire, etc. (kasina meditation). Upon development of samadhi, one's mind becomes temporarily purified of defilements, calm, tranquil, and luminous. Once the meditator achieves a strong and powerful concentration, his mind is ready to penetrate and see into the ultimate nature of reality, eventually obtaining release from all suffering. Important components of Buddhist meditation, frequently discussed (1, 2) by the Buddha, are the successively higher meditative states known as the four jhanas which in the language of the eight-fold path, is "right concentration". Right concentration has also been defined as concentration arising due to the previous seven steps of the noble eightfold path in the Maha-cattarisaka Sutta ("The Great Forty," MN 117) (Thanissaro, 1997). Four developments of samadhi are mentioned in the Pali Canon: - Jhana
- Increased alertness
- Insight into the true nature of phenomena (knowledge and vision)
- Final liberation ([1])
Post-canonical Pali literature identifies three different types of samadhi: - momentary samadhi (khaṇikasamādhi)[7]
- access concentration (upacārasamādhi)
- fixed concentration (appaṇāsamādhi)
Not all types of samadhi are recommended either. Those which focus and multiply the Five Hindrances are not suitable for development.([2]) The Buddhist suttas also mention that samadhi practitioners may develop supernormal powers (abhijna, also see siddhis), and list several that the Buddha developed, but warn that these should not be allowed to distract the practitioner from the larger goal of complete freedom from suffering. The bliss of Samadhi is not the goal of Buddhism; but it remains an important tool in reaching the goal of enlightenment. It has been said that Samatha/samadhi meditation and vipassana/insight meditation are the two wheels of the chariot of the noble eightfold path and the Buddha strongly recommended developing them both.[3] [edit] Analogous concepts
Samadhi of Meher Baba Photo by Win Coates According to the book "God Speaks" by Meher Baba, the Sufi words fana-fillah and baqa-billah are analogous to nirvikalpa samadhi and sahaj samadhi respectively.[8] The Christian state of "receiving the Holy Spirit" could also be viewed as analogous to laja samadhi. This is also similar to the Don Juan concept of "stopping the world" as described in the Carlos Castaneda books. States of consciousness with some of the features of Samadhi are experienced by individuals with no religious or spiritual preparation or disposition. Such episodes occur spontaneously and appear to be triggered by physically or emotionally charged peak experiences such as in runner's high or orgasmic ecstasy, however even mundane activities such as reveling in a sunset, dancing or a hard day's work have, in rare instances, induced the entire range of Samadhi from Laja to Nirvikalpa. The only distinction in these spontaneous secular samadhi from Vedic and Buddhist descriptions is that in the state of non-duality equivalent to Nirvikalpa, there is no record of any supernormal physical effects as purported in the literature such as the breath and heart-beat stopping or any degree of conscious control during the event. Also absent are siddhis-like special powers as an aftermath although virtually all experiencers report they became imbued with a holistic and compassionate world view and no longer feared death. As consciousness is in a state of duality in Laja and Savikalpa Samadhi there are some similarities to those described in NDEs near death experiences or Bardo in which interactions with archetypal events or entities may occur. In contrast- once swept into Nirvikalpa Samadhi- consciousness is transformed to a state of absolute non-duality whose only manifestations are light, bliss and love. Federal Labor will provide ISP (Internet Service Provider) filtering for all Australian homes, schools and public computers – under its Cyber-Safety policy announced today. This follows the recent high profile case of a 16 year-old student, Tom Wood who was able to bypass the Federal Government’s $84 million PC filters in a mere 30 minutes. Federal Labor supports Government initiatives to combat online threats, and believes that governments must do all they can to protect children from inappropriate material on the internet. The Howard Government has become complacent and its Internet safety policies are inadequate. As the online world evolves, government policy must be responsive. Our children also need to be better equipped to deal with emerging online threats, such as cyber-bullying, invasion of privacy, and computer addiction. Federal Labor will improve existing government programs in this area by: - Providing a mandatory ‘clean feed’ internet service for all homes, schools and public computers that are used by Australian children, so that ISPs will filter out content identified as prohibited by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The ACMA ‘blacklist’ will also be made more comprehensive to ensure that children are protected from harmful and inappropriate online material;
- Providing children with age-appropriate online cyber-safety resources and making sure teachers are skilled in cyber-safety;
- Establishing a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) to ensure that the Government is kept up-to-date with issues that affect children online;
- Undertaking further research into cyber-safety issues in Australia to determine where best to target future policy and funding in this area; and
- Establishing a permanent Joint Parliamentary Standing Committee to investigate and report on cyber-safety in Australia.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that during 2006 children’s use of the internet both at home, school and at other sites increased across all age groups.7 The Government’s Future of the Internet Project notes that the trend of increased internet usage is expected to develop further over the next decade.8 While there are many ways in which Australian children benefit from computers and the internet, there is also a darker side to their use. Labor recognises that, as internet use has proliferated, Australian children have increasingly faced online issues such as: .. having their identities appropriated by others; .. having photos or videos of themselves published online without their permission; .. suffering from computer and/or internet addiction; .. being traced by strangers from details they have entered online; .. being the subject of cyber-bullying; .. picking up a virus or trojan or being the victim of a phishing attack; or .. inadvertently downloading illegal content when file-sharing. The latest Symantec Internet Safety Report shows that e-security attacks such as phishing are becoming more sophisticated and that attacks are more frequent and targeted and are expected to continue in this vein.9 Recent Government research shows that: .. 46 per cent of Australian children worry about online safety; .. 28 per cent of Australian teenagers have seen evidence of online bullying abuse; .. 38 per cent of Australian children under the age of 13 have purposefully visited websites they think their parents would disapprove of them visiting; .. 24 per cent of Australian children are concerned about pop-up ads; and .. 17 per cent are concerned about contracting viruses during their online activities.10 These cyber-safety issues have the potential to adversely affect the health and well-being of Australian children – both as they occur and into a child’s future. Cyber-safety issues such as identity theft, cyber-bullying and cyber-stalking can cause health problems for Australian children, such as anxiety and depression. Computer addiction can also cause such things as anti-social behaviour or, if associated with pay per play online gaming, may also have a financial impact. Labor wants to ensure that the benefits the internet can provide to Australian children are not diluted by these cyber-issues or their effects. Australian children must learn how to use Election 07 Fact Sheet Labor’s Plan for Cyber-safety New Leadership 4 www.kevin07.com.au computers and the internet responsibly and also to feel safe and confident in an online environment. Labor also recognises that parents and teachers are an integral part of ensuring the cyber-safety of Australian children. It is vital that parents are aware of their children’s online activities and their children’s cyber-safety concerns. A recent Government study illustrated that the concerns that parents had about their children using the internet were generally not shared by their children.11 Only parents who are aware of the issues will be able to assist in combating them. Teachers, like parents, must also have a well developed knowledge of cyber-safety in order to ensure that children are taught how to use computers and the internet safely and how manage the cyber-safety issues that might concern them. Given the ubiquity of computers and internet and the effect cyber-safety issues can have on the health and wellbeing of Australian children, Labor considers that cyber-safety is a matter of priority. Australian children deserve protection and deserve to be armed with the cyber-safety knowledge to place them in good stead in their future endeavours. That is why Labor is concerned to tackle these online threats to Australian children head-on through its Plan for Cyber-safety. Cyber-safety under the Howard Government Australian children have grown up in a digital environment and have the ability to use computers and navigate the internet with ease. As a result of their computer and internet use, however, Australian children must deal daily with cyber-safety issues such as cyber-bulling, e-security and computer addiction. Federal Labor acknowledges that the Government’s $189 million Protecting Families Online program to address concerns about internet safety, such as a voluntary PC filtering and improving Australian Federal Police resources to tackle online sex-predators. Labor supports these initiatives. Labor believes that the Government’s initiatives could, however, be improved. Some of the deficiencies in the Howard Government’s approach are: .. implementation of an $84.8 million PC-filtering program, where the filters are easily bypassed and rendered ineffective, as was demonstrated in August 2007 by a 16 year old school boy; .. wasting $22 million of tax-payers’ money on a public awareness and education campaign, which uses fear tactics to get its message out; .. the current ACMA blacklist under the Howard Government is inadequate. It does not contain enough sites to protect our children from harmful and inappropriate content; .. the NetAlert website provides: .. inadequate and age-inappropriate material; .. inadequate assistance to children who are concerned about something they have seen or experienced online, directing them to a phone helpline or to the ACMA website, which in turn directs them to contact their local police or their lawyer; Election 07 Fact Sheet Labor’s Plan for Cyber-safety New Leadership 5 www.kevin07.com.au .. the Consultative Working Group (CWG) established by the Government is only tasked with investigating the threat posed by predators using social networking sites to contact and “groom” children, ignoring many other cyber-threats. Governments must do all that they can to protect Australian families and Australian children online. The Howard Government’s approach to cyber-safety falls short. Labor will better use these resources in order to ensure that Australian children can grow up to be responsible cyber-citizens and so that they may work and play online in a safe and responsible manner. Labor’s Fresh ideas for Cyber-safety Labor is committed to protecting Australian children online. In recent years computers and the internet have opened up a world of possibilities for Australian children. However, they have also opened our children up to dangers that did not previously exist such as cyber-bullying, e-security issues and computer addiction. While the Government has implemented its Protecting Australian Families Online program, it is simply not good enough. The message isn’t getting out there, the PC filters can be bypassed and Australian children are at risk. This will be remedied by Labor’s Cyber-safety Policy. Mandatory ISP Filtering A Rudd Labor Government will require ISPs to offer a ‘clean feed’ internet service to all homes, schools and public internet points accessible by children, such as public libraries. Labor’s ISP policy will prevent Australian children from accessing any content that has been identified as prohibited by ACMA, including sites such as those containing child pornography and X-rated material. Labor will also ensure that the ACMA black list is more comprehensive. It will do so, for example, by liaising with international agencies such as Interpol, Europol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre and ISPs to ensure that adequate online protection is provided to Australian children and families. Cyber-safety Education Cyber-safety education will ensure that young Australian children are provided with important cyber-safety tools from the time they are introduced to computers and to the internet. In turn, this will ensure that children are empowered to be responsible cyber-citizens and will grow up knowing that they have options when they see something online that concerns them. Labor will work with children, educators and IT specialists to improve the NetAlert website for parents and teachers. The website will contain up-to-date, relevant and effective cyber-safety educational material so that teachers can confidently teach Australian children on all aspects of cyber-safety and parents are informed of cyber-issues and their effects. Labor will also work with children, educators and IT specialists to develop a children’s cyber-safety website. The website will contain comprehensive and up-to-date cyber-safety educational material to teach children how to be responsible cyber-citizens, about issues of Election 07 Fact Sheet Labor’s Plan for Cyber-safety New Leadership 6 www.kevin07.com.au cyber-safety and how to tackle them and where to go for help or assistance if they see things online that concern them. The children’s cyber-safety website will house a clearly marked link for children to click on in order to report incidents that cause them concern or which they believe may be illegal. Unlike the ACMA and AFP online reporting forms, the reporting page will be simplified so that it is easy for children of all ages to fill-out and will refer the matter on to the relevant authorities. Labor will establish a specific online helpline to assist children with their cyber-safety concerns. The online helpline will: .. enable children of all ages to quickly and easily contact a responsible adult without having to leave their desks and make a telephone call; .. enable children to quickly and easily convey information to the information helpline operators, for example by cutting and pasting relevant URLs and online material into their online ‘chat’ with the helpline operator, rather than having to spell them out or describe them over the telephone; and .. provide the helpline operator with a better understanding of the inquiry or complaint as they will easily be able to locate the relevant and/or offending material and assist in providing advice. A Rudd Labor Government will work with the Deans of Education to ensure that all new student teachers achieve competence in the use of information and communications technology (ICT), including an understanding of cyber-safety and how to engage their students appropriately and effectively on these issues. From 2009, new teaching students will have to attain appropriate skills in ICT before they are able to graduate. A Rudd Labor Government will also work with the States and Territories to ensure all existing teachers are progressively trained so that they upgrade or develop competence in the use of ICT. Youth Advisory Group and Consultative Working Group A Rudd Labor Government will establish a Youth Advisory Group (YAG) to report to the Consultative Working Group (CWG). The YAG will comprise children aged between 12 and 18 years old, each with a demonstrated passion and interest in cyber-safety. The YAG will meet quarterly with the CWG and help to consider issues of cyber-safety, how best to address them and how to communicate this to young Australians in a relevant and age-appropriate way. Federal Labor will expand the terms of reference of the CWG, so that it will consider all aspects of cyber-safety faced by Australian children today and will work to develop a comprehensive means by which to address these issues. Research The digital landscape is evolving rapidly. Five years ago children primarily used the internet to send emails, play games and download music, today they arguably primarily spend their Election 07 Fact Sheet Labor’s Plan for Cyber-safety New Leadership 7 www.kevin07.com.au hours on MySpace or MSN or writing blogs. We simply do not know where the digital landscape will be five years from today. That is why a Rudd Labor Government will support Australian research into the changing digital landscape, its effect on Australian children and the means to combat cyber-safety issues. Such research will help identify the scale of these issues in Australia and determine where to target future policy and funding in this area. Joint Parliamentary Standing Committee on Cyber-safety Labor recognises that the issue of cyber-safety, fundamental to the health and well-being of Australian children, transcends political party lines. Labor will convene a permanent Joint Parliamentary Standing Committee on Cyber-safety. The Committee will investigate and report on: .. issues such as the prevalence of computer addiction, online identity theft, cyber-stalking, abuse of child avatars in virtual worlds and cyber-bullying in Australia involving Australian children; .. the effect of such issues on Australian children; .. the adequacy of cyber-safety education in Australia; and .. opportunities to improve the cyber-safety of Australian children. The Committee will provide all those concerned about this issue and its effects, such as parents, teachers, health workers and the police, an opportunity to present their concerns before Parliament and to help shape future policy. The outcomes of the Committee’s investigations will provide a reference point for further policy development in this area. And we have no doubt that Thomas Jefferson et al. would have chosen Ron Paul as the man to personally audit and then redistribute the contents of Fort Knox to its true owners, the American Public," said a Ron Paul spokesman.
Forcibly linking Ron Paul to each and every one of their members is consistent with MySpace's mission claims co-founder Tom Anderson. "MySpace is about open dialouge, social enrichment, cyber-spiritual connection and human communication. It's about making the world a better place. But it's also about making millions and millions of dollars. So when an advertiser comes to us and says 'Hey, we'd like your members to do this' we often turn to our user-base and say 'Listen up you geeky shut-ins and scrawny twerps...some dude just paid us $5.5 million in cold-as-ice cash, so stop clicking your f-cking mouse for a minute, take the ear buds out, and listen to whatever sh-t he has to say."
Congressman Paul, according to TechPresident.com and other leading measurement authorities has created by far the most buzz of any candidate online via blogs, social networking, and video clips posted by motivated supporters. Time will tell if his "netroots" strategy pays off, but one thing is for certain said MySpace's Anderson: "On January 3rd MySpace is PaulSpace whether you like it or not."

This 188-page report covers air-, land- and sea-based unmanned technology from 2007 to 2032. The long document notes that drone aircraft and ground-based robots have already proved they could be useful in Iraq and Afghanistan by saving soldiers lives. The report also integrates contributions of combat commanders pointing out at possible improvements to today’s systems, such as ‘better sensor technology for use on unmanned systems to identify underwater mines and land-based improvised explosive devices.’ This report also looks at how developments in artificial intelligence and robotics might lead to ‘autonomous, ‘thinking’ unmanned systems that could, for example, be used in aerial platforms to suppress enemy air defenses.’
DoD Vision for Unmanned Systems
You can see above a “Joint Services Roadmap for Achieving DoD Vision for Unmanned Systems” (Credit:DoD). This chart is included in the “Unmanned Systems Roadmap: 2007-2032” report (PDF format, 188 pages, 11.9 MB, December 10, 2007). You’ll find a larger version on page 17 of the PDF document.
As you can guess, such a report uses many acronyms, even in the executive summary, which starts like this. “Today’s military has seen an evolution in technology that is creating an entirely new capability to project power through the use of unmanned systems while reducing the risk to human life. The contributions of unmanned systems continue to increase. As of October 2006, coalition Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs), exclusive of hand-launched systems, had flown almost 400,000 flight hours in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) had responded to over 11,000 Improvised Explosive Device (IED) situations, and Unmanned Maritime Systems (UMSs) had provided security to ports. As a result of these successes, the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) emphasized the importance of unmanned systems in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT).”
And it continues by describing why such a roadmap is necessary. “As the Department of Defense (DoD) develops and employs an increasingly sophisticated force of unmanned systems over the next 25 years (2007 to 2032), technologists, acquisition officials, and operational planners require a clear, coordinated plan for the evolution and transition of unmanned systems technology. With the publication of this document, individual roadmaps and master plans for UASs, UGVs, and UMSs (defined as Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) and Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs)) have been incorporated into a comprehensive DoD Unmanned Systems Roadmap.”
The report also highlights the most urgent mission needs that are supported both technologically and operationally by various unmanned systems.

On page 15 of the PDF version of the report, you’ll find a definition of what is an unmanned vehicle for the DoD: “A powered vehicle that does not carry a human operator, can be operated autonomously or remotely, can be expendable or recoverable, and can carry a lethal or nonlethal payload. Ballistic or semi-ballistic vehicles, cruise missiles, artillery projectiles, torpedoes, mines, satellites, and unattended sensors (with no form of propulsion) are not considered unmanned vehicles. Unmanned vehicles are the primary component of unmanned systems.”
And here is the DoD vision of the future. “The DoD will develop and employ an increasingly sophisticated force of unmanned systems over the next 25 years (2007 to 2032). This force must evolve to become seamlessly integrated with manned systems as well as with other unmanned systems. The Department will pursue greater autonomy in order to improve the ability of unmanned systems to operate independently, either individually or collaboratively, to execute complex missions in a dynamic environment.”

The report contains three appendices describing respectively the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) on 58 pages, the Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) on 21 pages and the Unmanned Maritime Systems (UMSs) on 19 pages. This is the most complete inventory of UAVs I’ve ever seen. It even includes two references to Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot (BEAR) on pages 48 and 158 of the PDF version.
I don’t think this report contains any classified information. However, this is a valuable resource if you’re interested in military robots.

According to the news reports this bill was supposed to have been voted on last week by our senators. That's one vote away from Bush's desk, ya know. I just got this email back from Senator Cornyn. He says he is going to keep our civil liberties in mind. He knows I'm watching. Please let your senators know you are watching. Now I need to find out who is on the Committee, especially who heads the thing up. I want to write to that person next. Well, first I want to encourage y'all to write to your representatives about whatever you see that is not constitutional. Whether it is your local government, your state or Washington, they do feel the heat when we write, email or call and let them know we are watching and we are voters. All I did was send a short email to Sen. Cornyn. I've seen this work before on things and if enough of us write or call about this bill, we can all make a difference. One more thing. I am really excited about the energy we have going! I think Ron Paul has made a lot of folks aware of the Constitution and the fact that Washington has not been following it. A lot of people who haven't discovered Ron Paul yet, or don't understand or agree with all his policies still don't want the government holding their hand from cradle to grave. Americans are way too independent for all this nonsense. The new-found knowledge about the Constitution gives us a real basis for a LOT of our complaints about too much government interference. A newly announced FBI plan to catalog precise physical characteristics of individuals around the world — a vast $1 billion dollar project that makes the bureau's fingerprint database look quaint by comparison — is raising eyebrows among critics who worry about how the data may be used.Taking advantage of the science of biometrics, which relies on precise body measurements unique to every human being, the FBI hopes to be able to identify criminal and terrorist suspects by face-shape, scars and even iris patterns.But the idea raises some red flags for CNN legal analyst Sonny Hostin. "The goal to have a comprehensive data base to track terror suspects, criminals, that sort of thing. I think it's a wonderful goal," said Hostin. "But you have to be very careful, because what if the wrong person is in that database? That is something that can follow you forever." Hostin pointed out that while victims of other forms of identity theft could eventually correct the record, stolen biometric information — in the wrong hands — would present a more permanent problem. In a Saturday piece about the initiative in the Washington Post, Silicon Valley tech forecaster Paul Saffo worried that the FBI would be unable to ensure that the data was secure. "Unlike say, a credit card number, biometric data is forever," Saffo told the paper. "If someone steals and spoofs your iris image, you can't just get a new eyeball." Asked by CNN anchor Alina Cho whether the database should concern "those of use who aren't on terror watch lists, like the two of us," Hostin cut her off. "Hopefully," she joked about her absence from the terror list, but added that the plan warranted serious concern. "I'm already in a database, having been a federal prosecutor and having security clearance," she said. "The FBI wants to take that information and keep it and that's the problem — and generally you can get access to it and ask for information that's on you. But in this situation you may not be able to get that information. So I think everyone does have to be careful." As reported by the Post, other critics voiced additional concerns about the program. "You're giving the federal government access to an extraordinary amount of information linked to biometric identifiers that is becoming increasingly inaccurate," said Marc Rotenberg, the executive director for the Electronic Privacy Information Center. Nevertheless, Barry Steinhardt, the director of the Technology and Liberty Project at the American Civil Liberties Union, told the paper that the system was poised to become a ubiquitous law enforcement tool. They believed NRA had no involvement in gun control politics back then. Because they and others didn't believe me, I prepared this historical record — to prove my claim and inform others. I agree that blaming today's NRA management for transgressions of their predecessors is wrong. But confronting NRA management's longstanding support of gun control is a first step toward understanding that "My NRA" of today views the Second Amendment differently than America's Founders did — and they have for a very long time. Don't take my word for it. KeepAndBearArms.com — The National Rifle Association has been called "the largest and oldest gun control organization in America" by more than a few gun owners. A fair amount of evidence supports their claim. As the Gun Control Act of 1968 was nearing the President's desk, NRA was being accused by Senator Robert Kennedy (D-NY) of not supporting "any legislation to try and control the misuse of rifles and pistols in this country." Naturally, NRA needed to respond to the allegation, and they responded with great detail and unusual candor. To deflect Senator Kennedy's assertion, NRA published an article by their magazine's Associate Editor entitled "WHERE THE NRA STANDS ON GUN LEGISLATION" — elaborating at length about NRA's longstanding support for a wide variety of gun controls that included gun and gunowner registration, waiting periods, age restrictions, licenses for carrying a firearm or having a firearm in your vehicle, increased penalties for violating gun laws, regulating ammunition and more. Following are several telling quotes from the March 1968 American Rifleman — NRA's premier magazine, then and now — and brief analysis of a few of them. First, let's clear up the matter of NRA's support of NFA'34: "The NRA supported The National Firearms Act of 1934 which taxes and requires registration of such firearms as machine guns, sawed-off rifles and sawed-off shotguns. ... NRA support of Federal gun legislation did not stop with the earlier Dodd bills. It currently backs several Senate and House bills which, through amendment, would put new teeth into the National and Federal Firearms Acts." —American Rifleman, March 1968, P. 22 Unless someone has evidence to prove that the NRA lied to its membership in its premier magazine, let the record show that the NRA got behind the first unconstitutional federal gun law in America and then bragged about having done so, many years later — decades after the law had been continually used to violate the rights of untold numbers of American citizens, including, surely, their own members. The "Dodd" to which the above quote refers is the late Senator Thomas J. Dodd. Senator Dodd mimicked the Nazi Weapons Law of 1938, applied the underlying principles to the Gun Control Act of 1968, and took a leading role in getting the bill signed into federal law. "The NRA supported The Federal Firearms Act of 1938, which regulates interstate and foreign commerce in firearms and pistol or revolver ammunition..." (P. 22) The term "interstate commerce" is the BATF's fundamental justification for its firearms branch — a "color of law" excuse for the many assaults of innocent people they've conducted. "The NRA supported the original 'Dodd Bill' to amend the Federal Firearms Act in regard to handguns when it was introduced as S.1975 in August, 1963. Among its provisions was the requirement that a purchaser submit a notarized statement to the shipper that he was over 18 and not legally disqualified from possessing a handgun." (P. 22) That's one form of registration. "In January, 1965, with the continued support of the NRA, Senator Dodd introduced an amended version of his first bill, now designated 5.14 and expanded to cover rifles and shotguns as well as handguns." (P. 22) That's an extension of one form of registration to all types of guns not already under registration schemes at the time. In order to "put new teeth into the National and Federal Firearms Acts," NRA management also pressed the federal government, in 1968, to: "Regulate the movement of handguns in interstate and foreign commerce by: "a. requiring a sworn statement, containing certain information, from the purchaser to the seller for the receipt of a handgun in interstate commerce;" That's a registration list. "b. providing for notification of local police of prospective sales;" That's another registration mechanism. "c. requiring an additional 7-day waiting period by the seller after receipt of acknowledgement of notification to local police;" Wait a week to exercise your inalienable rights. "d. prescribing a minimum age of 21 for obtaining a license to sell firearms and increasing the license fees;" That is called Age Discrimination. In essence, in 1968, the NRA was saying "You can go die over in Vietnam for your country at age 18, but you can't sell a constitutionally protected item to your own neighbors for three more years." "e. providing for written notification by manufacturer or dealer to carrier that a firearm is being shipped in interstate commerce;" "Carrier" includes the U.S. Postal Service — another ripe opportunity for the federal government to collect names of gun buyers. "f. increasing penalties for violation." (P. 22-23) What do you think America's Founders would say about the NRA calling for "increasing penalties for violation" of unconstitutional gun laws? At least as early as 1930, the NRA supported: "...requir[ing] the purchaser of a pistol to give information about himself which is submitted by the seller to local police authorities..." Historically noteworthy is the fact that the Germans were simultaneously doing the same thing, laying the groundwork for a Hitler to happen. and "...requir[ing] a license to carry a pistol concealed on one's person or in a vehicle..." [emphasis mine] Ever heard of a license to carry a firearm in a vehicle? NRA has — over 70 years ago. Not only has NRA management long supported gun owner registration, they've worked hard for it and still do. And NRA's current management still supports "penalties" for exercising your rights, which they now call "zero tolerance enforcement". (See Project Exile Condemnation Coalition and the Project Exile Archives for more information.) "Many other instances of NRA support for worthwhile gun legislation could be quoted. But these suffice to show that Senator Kennedy's 'terrible indictment' of the NRA is groundless." (P. 23) "Worthwhile gun legislation"? The "terrible indictment" of NRA, as you will see in the full text below, was that NRA didn't support gun control. NRA set that matter straight with a loud thud. NRA Management still to this day supports a wide variety of ever-complex gun controls. And despite taking in hundreds of millions of dollars a year, they've still never managed a Supreme Court court victory based on the Second Amendment's historically-valid "individual right" argument. It's no wonder — their version of the Second Amendment is different than that of America's Founding Fathers. Do notice the subtitle of NRA's 1968 article below. A "97-year record" of supporting gun control, to NRA's management, was a matter of pride. Some things never change: "We think it's reasonable to support the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act. ... We think it's reasonable to expect full enforcement of federal firearms laws by the federal government. ... That's why we support Project Exile -- the fierce prosecution of federal gun laws...we think it's reasonable because it works. ... WEBBER Associate Editor THE AMERICAN RIFLEMAN "I think it is a terrible indictment of the National Rifle Association that they haven't supported any legislation to try and control the misuse of rifles and pistols in this country." "The NRA supported The National Firearms Act of 1934 which taxes and requires registration of such firearms as machine guns, sawed-off rifles and sawed-off shotguns..." —American Rifleman March 1968, P. 22 That flat assertion was made by Senator Robert Kennedy (N.Y.), Jan. 16 in addressing the New York State University law school in Buffalo. Terming Kennedy's accusation "a smear of a great American organization," NRA Executive Vice President Franklin L. Orth pointed out that "The National Rifle Association has been in support of workable, enforceable gun control legislation since its very inception in 1871." A few days later, Orth seconded the request of President Lyndon Johnson, made Jan. 17 in his State of the Union message, for a curb on mail-order sales. "The duty of Congress is clear," Orth said, "it should act now to pass legislation that will keep undesirables, including criminals, drug addicts and persons adjudged mentally irresponsible or alcoholic, or juveniles from obtaining firearms through the mails." "The NRA supported The Federal Firearms Act of 1938, which regulates interstate and foreign commerce in firearms and pistol or revolver ammunition..." —American Rifleman March 1968, P. 22 The NRA position, as stated by Orth, emphasizes that the NRA has consistently supported gun legislation which it feels would penalize misuse of guns without harassing law-abiding hunters, target shooters and collectors. Here is the record over the years: Item: The late Karl T. Frederick, an NRA president, served for years as special consultant with the Commissioners on Uniform State Laws to frame The Uniform Firearms Act of 1930. Adopted by Alabama, Indiana, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Washington, the Act directly attacks the "mail order murder" to which President Johnson referred in his State of the Union Message. It specifically forbids delivery of pistols to convicts, drug addicts, habitual drunkards, incompetents, and minors under the age of 18. Other salient provisions of the Act require a license to carry a pistol concealed on one's person or in a vehicle; require the purchaser of a pistol to give information about himself which is submitted by the seller to local police authorities; specify a 48-hour time lapse between application for purchase and delivery. Item: The NRA supported The National Firearms Act of 1934 which taxes and requires registration of such firearms as machine guns, sawed-off rifles and sawed-off shotguns. Item: The NRA supported The Federal Firearms Act of 1938, which regulates interstate and foreign commerce in firearms and pistol or revolver ammunition, and prohibits the movement in interstate or foreign commerce of firearms and ammunition between certain persons and under certain conditions. "NRA supported the original 'Dodd Bill' to amend the Federal Firearms Act..." —American Rifleman March 1968, P. 22 More recently, the spate of articles on gun legislation has spread the erroneous impression that the NRA has always opposed Senator Thomas J. Dodd's attempts to keep guns out of the hands of juveniles. This is simply untrue. The facts are these: The NRA worked closely with the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency, of which Senator Dodd was chairman, in its investigation into the relationship between juvenile crime and the availability of firearms. The NRA supported the original "Dodd Bill" to amend the Federal Firearms Act in regard to handguns when it was introduced as S.1975 in August, 1963. Among its provisions was the requirement that a purchaser submit a notarized statement to the shipper that he was over 18 and not legally disqualified from possessing a handgun. In January, 1965, with the continued support of the NRA, Senator Dodd introduced an amended version of his first bill, now designated 5.14 and expanded to cover rifles and shotguns as well as handguns. "Senator Kennedy's 'terrible indictment' of the NRA is groundless." —American Rifleman March 1968, P. 23 The parting of the ways came only when Senator Dodd introduced still another bill (S.1592) in March, 1965, which drastically intensified his earlier bills. The NRA opposed S.1592 and subsequent bills introduced by the Connecticut Senator. If passed into law, S.1592 would, among other things, have ended all interstate shipments of firearms except to persons holding a Federal firearms license. It also would have prohibited even a Federal licensee from selling a pistol to anyone residing in another State. NRA support of Federal gun legislation did not stop with the earlier Dodd bills. It currently backs several Senate and House bills which, through amendment, would put new teeth into the National and Federal Firearms Acts. The essential provisions which the NRA supports are contained in 2 Senate bills introduced by Senator Roman L. Hruska (Nebr.) and House bills introduced by Congressmen Cecil R. King (17th fist.-Calif.) and Robert L. F. Sikes (1st Dist.Fla.). These bills would: 1. Impose a mandatory penalty for the carrying or use of a firearm, transported in interstate or foreign commerce, during the commission of certain crimes. 2. Place "destructive devices" (bombs, mines, grenades, crew-served military ordnance) under Federal regulation. 3. Prohibit any licensed manufacturer or dealer from shipping any firearm to any person in any State in violation of the laws of that state. 4. Regulate the movement of handguns in interstate and foreign commerce by: a. requiring a sworn statement, containing certain information, from the CONTINUED ON PAGE 23 (text below) THE AMERICAN RIFLEMAN (March 1968) purchaser to the seller for the receipt of a handgun in interstate commerce; b. providing for notification of local police of prospective sales; c. requiring an additional 7-day waiting period by the seller after receipt of acknowledgement of notification to local police; d. prescribing a minimum age of 21 for obtaining a license to sell firearms and increasing the license fees; e. providing for written notification by manufacturer or dealer to carrier that a firearm is being shipped in interstate commerce; f. increasing penalties for violation. Through bulletins to its members, the NRA has often voiced approval and support of State and local ordinances designed to keep firearms out of the hands of undesirables. A bulletin of Feb. 20, 1964 notified Virginia members of the introduction in the Virginia House of Delegates of a bill requiring a 72-hour waiting period for purchase of a handgun. In the bulletin, which outlined the provisions of the bill, NRA Secretary Frank C. Daniel commented as follows: "A number of States and local jurisdictions have a waiting period of varying length for the purchase of a concealable firearm; and, where intelligently and reasonably administered, it has not proved to be an undue burden on the shooter and sportsman. ... The bill from a technical point of view adequately protects citizens of good character from any arbitrary denial of their right to purchase a handgun. It should be judged on the basis of whether or not a waiting period for the purchase of a handgun is desirable for the State." The bill was killed in the House Feb. 25, 1964. When bills were introduced in the Illinois legislature in February, 1965, to provide mandatory penalties for crimes committed while armed with a firearm, the NRA expressed its opinion to Illinois members in these terms: NRA Secretary Daniel "The purpose of these bills is to penalize the criminal misuse of firearms and weapons, and not the firearms themselves. This is a sound and reasonable basis for regulation and is aimed in the right direction--that of criminal conduct when armed. Senate Bill No. 351 and House Bill No. 472 are worthy of the support of the sports-men of the State of Illinois." The bills were passed by the Senate and House but were vetoed by Gov. Otto Kerner a few months later. Many other instances of NRA support for worthwhile gun legislation could be quoted. ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – According to the New Hampshire State Republican Party and an Associated Press report, Republican presidential candidate and Texas Congressman Ron Paul will be excluded from an upcoming forum of Republican candidates to be broadcast by Fox News on January 6, 2008.
“Given Ron Paul’s support in New Hampshire and his recent historic fundraising success, it is outrageous that Dr. Paul would be excluded,” said Ron Paul 2008 campaign chairman Kent Snyder. “Dr. Paul has consistently polled higher in New Hampshire than some of the other candidates who have been invited.”
Snyder continued, “Paul supporters should know that we are continuing to make inquiries with Fox News as to why they have apparently excluded Dr. Paul from this event.”
